Knife Scales

Spyderco Resilience Scales

I got the inspiration for this from Smoky Mountain Knife Works Custom Shipwreck Patina scales

Starting with bar stock

2" UM-360 Brass from McMaster Carr.

PATINA

This part is actually really easy and fun. I found a good instructable here. This can be done on brass or copper.

Flame Anodizing Hardware

I figured after all of this, putting the plain stainless steel screws back in would look a little weird. So I went with some philips screws I had on hand. I removed the black oxide finish and flamed them with a torch to a deep blue. This was a bit tricky because it is very easy to overshoot the desired color.

Different Temperatures:    It is easy to overshoot the colors. once the flame is removed it will continue to warm up for a short time. The most difficult color to achieve is purple.

Finished!

I managed to finish this in a weekend, with the bulk of the time being hand sanding and waiting for the scales to patina. I think the next ones I do will be in copper.
